The most popular summer berry as an example of super snacks … with some caveats
We will learn about the long-awaited onset of summer not only from the weather forecast reports, but also with the appearance of certain local products. So, the debutant of the season is ripe strawberries (there are more than 600 varieties of it in the world) – a beauty-monger. Its consumption affects the skin and hair, and the number on the scales, and in general – on the general condition of the body. Officially, it is not considered a superfood, but the facts speak for itself: it contains slightly less antioxidants than blue and purple berries, which really belong to this category.
Since ancient times, strawberries have been considered a magic berry and are mentioned in many legends. So, in Bavaria, it is still jokingly used in a festive ceremony: small fragrant baskets are hung on the horns of cows. It is believed that forest fairies adore her and give a lot of milk in exchange. Interesting fact: the first cakes in history were made from strawberries. (This season, according to the royal pastry chef, they are especially relevant.) American Indians mixed berries with cornmeal and baked. The colonialists liked strawberry bread, and they created their own version of the recipe. In Rome, the strawberry was a symbol of Venus, the goddess of love, due to its distinctive shape and red color. It has been used to relieve “symptoms of melancholy” and to treat “broken heart”.
Over time, scientific research has confirmed the fabulous speculation: for example, strawberries can really improve heart health. What happens to the body when we eat this berry?
A Harvard University study (published in the scientific journal Circulation) confirmed that regular consumption of anthocyanins (a class of flavonoids found in these berries) reduced the risk of heart attack in 32% of women. To do this, you need to eat strawberries at least three times a week as a natural anti-inflammatory agent that protects the walls of blood vessels from damage caused by cholesterol. And the high polyphenol content prevents blood clots.
You may have heard that antioxidants not only slow down the aging process, but also fight free radicals: a) neutralize the effect of ultraviolet radiation; b) block the growth of tumors and reduce inflammation – a kind of cancer prevention.
ADVANTAGES OF STRAWBERRY
Moving on to strawberry wellness and body benefits.
As explained by a specialist in aesthetic and anti-aging medicine, red berries contribute to weight loss. This food is low glycemic index (40) and high in fiber, regulates sugar and boosts metabolism, even if you eat it lying on the couch watching a romantic comedy. It is a smart choice both for diabetics and for those who want to open the beach season as fit as possible. To start the process, you need to eat about 37 strawberries per day. In addition to the body, you will also pump the brain – the berry helps to strengthen neural connections and improves memory. And the rare folic acid, which gynecologists often prescribe to women, is contained in it in excess.
Do you know at least one healthy product that does not contain vitamin C? It seems to have become a truly modern marker of success. So on strawberries, this “C” sample can be safely put: a cup of fresh berries (about 150 grams) contains 160% of the daily value – and at the same time only 50 calories!
What is the organic combination of strawberries in the diet, if you are fed up with mono-berries? The most obvious is a fruit salad (+ grapes, pineapple, peaches, honey) or a hearty version, with chicken, oranges, goat cheese, and spinach leaves. Alternatively, add it to Greek yogurt with a drop of agave syrup and almonds, or to oatmeal with coconut milk. Or indulge in a gourmet bagel – a bagel with cream cheese and berries.
DISADVANTAGES OF STRAWBERRY

There are lees to every wine. Each year, the Environmental Working Group compiles a list of fruits and vegetables that are high in pesticide residues, known as the “dirty dozen”. And strawberries are often listed in it. Follow her organic origin!
Another caveat, from a doctor, is that the high potassium content of strawberries is incompatible with certain medications (beta-blockers) and can be harmful to people with kidney problems.
